About Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. The condition can be self-limiting or can progress to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer. Hepatitis viruses are the most common cause of hepatitis in the world but other infections, toxic substances (e.g. alcohol, certain drugs), and autoimmune diseases can also cause hepatitis [WHO].

Globally, over 300 million people are living with viral hepatitis with approximately 1.3 million deaths per year. In 2016, World Health Assembly adopted the Global Health Sector Strategy on viral hepatitis to eliminate hepatitis by 2030. Different World Health Organization member countries are working on hepatitis control strategies to achieve hepatitis elimination [NCBI].

About #NHCMY2020 Team

A dedicated volunteer team of professionals from the healthcare sector and beyond that work tirelessly to build a conference that serves as a learning and development platform for Malaysian healthcare professionals. Year-on-year, this conference has been the focal point for the Ministry of Health (MOH) to report and highlight key developments in viral hepatitis as well as an opportunity for us to learn from the best practices across the world that could be adopted and implemented in our own elimination journey. We have been honoured to have the esteemed support of Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham bin Abdullah, Director General of Health, Malaysia who himself has been a huge advocate for access to medicines and a more patient-centric public-health approach in eliminating viral hepatitis.
